PIPS2 Activity : To distinguish between soluble and insoluble materials

Materials required:

  • Kitchen roll

  • 2 cups or beakers

  • water

  • flour

  • instant coffee

Introduction

Teacher sets up equipment as illustrated, using plain water only to demonstrate what the children have to do at home.

Homework Task

Half class will use flour + water, other half class will be using instant coffee and water. Children will observe what happens and record in some way e.g. drawing, notes

Pupils report back observations to rest of class and discussion generated will hopefully lead to further exploration e.g. what happens when?

  • the height of the cups is varied

  • materials making the bridge is changed

  • the substances mixed in the water change

To ES-D3.2  - Explain how evaporation and filtration can be used in the separation of solids from liquids
