ES-E3.6

ES-E3.6 Describe how metal elements can be extracted from compounds in the Earth’s crust
State that the less reactive metals are found uncombined in the earth’s crust and that the more reactive metals have to be extracted from ores.
State that some metals can be obtained from metal oxides by heat alone, some by heating with carbon and some need other methods such as electricity.
State what is meant by electrolysis.
State that ores are naturally occurring compounds of metals.
Explain the need for recycling metals in terms of the finite nature of metal resources and in terms of energy saving.

1 Extract copper and lead from their oxides.
2 Investigate how some metals are extracted (gold, silver, copper, lead, iron and aluminium.)
3 Examine various ores.
