EF-D1.4

EF-D1.4 Use the terms ‘pitch’ and volume to describe sound
Loud sounds are produced by large vibrations & quiet sounds by small vibrations.
Sound can be different due to difference in pitch.
Pitch is how ‘high’ or ‘low’ a sound is.
A ‘high’ sound has a high pitch .
A ‘low’ sound has a low pitch.
The scale in music shows a range of pitch.

1 Make a range of simple musical instruments.
2 Compare and describe the different sounds produced by these instruments.
3 Explore how pitch can be changed in a variety of drums and stringed instruments.
4 What effect does size of vibration have on loudness of sound? Twang a guitar string and observe the relationship between how hard it is twanged and how loud the sound is. The larger the vibration, the louder the sound should be.
5 Collect similar glass bottles, put different volumes of water in them. Tap the bottles with a hard object e.g. a pencil using the same force.
Discuss the differences in the pitch of the sound produced. What caused the differences in pitch?
