Describe the relationship between pitch & frequency and between loudness & amplitude |
| Use an oscilloscope and a microphone to examine sound waves. | |
| State that :- | State that the height of the trace is called the amplitude. |
| State that louder sounds have bigger amplitudes. | |
| State that the frequency of a sound is the number of vibrations per second. | |
| State that the frequency of a sound is measured in hertz. | |
| State that the greater the frequency of vibration the higher the pitch of the sound we hear. | |
| 1 | Use Signal Generator, loudspeaker and CRO. Can look at signal on CRO and hear it from speaker. Get class to make drawings of the signal for loud/quiet/high/low. |
| 2 | Use a keyboard connected to speaker and oscilloscope to demonstrate link between appearance of waves and sound heard. |
| 3 | Ask pupils to describe sounds in terms of loudness and pitch from appearance of oscilloscope trace. |
