Margerine tub guitar1. There are many books which have long lists of simple instruments you can make. Here are two ideas :-

Most schools do not have small stringed instruments in their music collections but you can make a simple one as follows.

Using an empty 500 g margarine tub without a lid, stretch one or two elastic bands around the outside of the tub and the children can then pluck them as strings.

This set up can be used as follows to show a difference in pitch. Take a 15 cm ruler and place it inside the tub underneath the elastic band.

By pulling the ruler out of the tub, the bands are stretched and the pitch of the note goes up when the band is plucked.

Cut a piece of card about 20 cm square and either use glue or double sided tape to stick straws of different lengths along it. Line the tops of the straws up along the edge of the card and put the shortest at one end leading to the longest at the other. This makes a set of pan pipes which can be played by blowing gently over the tops of the straws.
