Training materials (Day 1)

It is not anticipated that these materials should be directly communicated to teachers but CPD trainers may wish to adapt parts of it for their own purposes.

You can click on the links to run the Powerpoints in your web browser or right click and "Save Target as ..." If you do download the presentations please be aware that some contain video clips that must be downloaded also and placed in the same folder or directory as the Powerpoint.

The materials are designed to be delivered in the following order over three days:-
Day 1 (The Thinking Classroom)
Day 2 (Formative Assessment)
Day 3 (Investigative Approach / Science with Attitude)


Day 1 (The Thinking Classroom) - Split into three distinct parts - theory    misconceptions    learning styles

Each Powerpoint (ppt) presentation (underlined links below) comes with a script that can be viewed or printed with the slide using PowerPoint’s notes page facility. You can click on the links to run the Powerpoint in your web browser or right click and "Save Target as ..."

theory (ppt - 0.65 Mb) - the day starts with a review of some of the theory related to the thinking classroom and becomes more practical as the day progresses. It is designed to set the scene for the following days and to give an insight into how pupils and teachers learn and how best to present information.
misconceptions (ppt - 0.4 Mb) - covers where they come from, what effects they have on learning and what strategies can be used to for overcome them. It is a fairly short presentation with a longer group activity at the end.
learning styles (0.4 Mb - 0.4 Mb) - This presentation and workshop gives teachers the chance to discover whether they are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner. It allows them to experience the digestive system as a VAK activity and to take an area of the P6-S2 curriculum and design an activity for visual auditory and kinaesthetic learners. The gallery walk at the end also gives participants a first chance at presenting to a small group.
