Training materials (Day 2)

It is not anticipated that these materials should be directly communicated to teachers but CPD trainers may wish to adapt parts of it for their own purposes.

You can click on the links to run the Powerpoints in your web browser or right click and "Save Target as ..." If you do download the presentations please be aware that some contain video clips that must be downloaded also and placed in the same folder or directory as the Powerpoint.

The materials are designed to be delivered in the following order over three days:-
Day 1 (The Thinking Classroom)
Day 2 (Formative Assessment)
Day 3 (Investigative Approach / Science with Attitude)

Day 2 (Formative Assessment) - gives participants the opportunity to think about formative assessment in relation to science. It shows that formative assessment is much more than 2 stars and a wish and emphasises that, without proper follow up with pupils, true formative assessment is not taking place. The day covers :- introduction & questioning       feedback       sharing criteria with learners    self & peer assessment
see also the Activity resources for Day 2 (Word files)
Each Powerpoint presentation (ppt) presentation (underlined links below) comes with a script that can be viewed or printed with the slide using PowerPoint’s notes page facility. You can click on the links to run the Powerpoint in your web browser or right click and "Save Target as ..."

introduction and questioning (ppt - 0.5 Mb) - This challenges participants to think about what they believe to be formative assessment and asks them to consider what they already do with their pupils that they believe to be formative assessment. It then moves on to consider questioning as a way in which to gather information so that formative assessment can take place. Questioning techniques are then looked at in depth and participants then generate rich questions and smaller questions based on attainment targets from the 5-14 Guidelines.
feedback (ppt - 0.35 Mb) - This contains a very short presentation on ways of giving written feedback to children. The rest of the session is a workshop where participants are invited to comment mark 4 pieces of children’s work.
sharing criteria with learners plus self & peer assessment (ppt - 0.4 Mb) - this session looks at how best to share broad learning intentions and specific learning outcomes with pupils. It distinguishes between doing this for skills and knowledge and understanding. Ways of introducing and implementing self and peer assessment are considered. The importance of creating a safe to fail classroom environment is demonstrated.
Activity resources for Day 2 (Word files) - big questions, Black question cards, Black question cards 1, Question cards gallus, Questions and record sheet.
