Training materials (Day 3)

It is not anticipated that these materials should be directly communicated to teachers but CPD trainers may wish to adapt parts of it for their own purposes.

You can click on the links to run the Powerpoints in your web browser or right click and "Save Target as ..." If you do download the presentations please be aware that some contain video clips that must be downloaded also and placed in the same folder or directory as the Powerpoint.

The materials are designed to be delivered in the following order over three days:-
Day 1 (The Thinking Classroom)
Day 2 (Formative Assessment)
Day 3 (Investigative Approach / Science with Attitude)

Day 3 (Investigative Approach / Science with Attitude) - This final day allows participants to apply the knowledge and techniques they have acquired from the previous days. It also has opportunities to consider the wider position of science and science teaching and covers the investigative approach and science with attitude. see also the Activity resources for Day 2 (Word files)
Each Powerpoint presentation (below) comes with a script that can be viewed or printed with the slide using PowerPoint’s notes page facility.

investigative approach (ppt - 0.75 Mb) - this session covers why we do open ended investigations in science and how best to stimulate and enhance investigations in investigations & Teaching Strategies and investigations & the thinking classroom. It emphasises that investigations must be taught. In groups participants plan an investigation including the above and present this to the other groups. Also 2 videos - brainstorming (3.2 Mb) and swapping plans (3.75 Mb)
science with attitude (ppt - 0.35 Mb) - This final session highlights the developing informed attitude strand of the 5-14 guidelines and the need to encourage ‘scientific citizens’. It is largely workshop based with opportunities to look at the more contemporary issues in science.
Activity resources for Day 3 (Word files) - Advances in Plant Science, Agree or Disagree, Animal ethics 1, Animal ethics 2, Black question cards, Black question cards 1, Gallus investigation book, Genetic disorder activity, investigation starter 1, investigation starter 2, investigation task cards and  Pros and Cons.
