Attainment Target B1.1 (Example 4 of 4)

Emma

Context

As part of their unit When Gran was a Girl, Emma and her class visited a restored miner's cottage, containing artefacts dating back to the 1930s.

Transcript

T. - That's good, Emma. Can you tell me a wee bit about this?
Emma - That's their cooker. They didn't have gas or electricity.
T. - So how did they cook?
Emma - They put coal in here, and burned it, so the top of the cooker got very very hot and you could cook on it.
T. - And what is this?
Emma - That's a bath. They didn't have a bathroom or a shower, so every night when Archie came home he was filthy because he worked under the ground digging coal. And his wife would boil up water on the cooker and Archie would scrub himself clean in this wee bath.
