CONCRETE MODELLING

Concrete modelling is a technique that can be used by teachers to enable children to visualise an abstract concept. The pupils work with materials to produce a model that helps to develop their understanding. It can be used successfully in many areas of ‘Living Things’.

In the example on the DVD, pupils are seen using cards to model alleles to promote understanding of dominant and recessive genes.

Concrete modelling could be used to illustrate

  • cell structure

  • interdependence of living things with their environment

  • enzyme function
