SONGS AND RAPS      EXAMPLES

Songs, raps and poems can be used in a variety of ways e.g. to :-

  • introduce a topic

  • promote discussion

  • assess current knowledge

  • assess pupils’ understanding during or at the end of a topic

  • promote involvement and enhance motivation

Pupils can be encouraged to compose their own poems/raps, as seen in the DVD example, or commercially produced varieties could be used.

Creative Trespass - Fusing science and poetry in the classroom (ASE publication, 2000);

Star-Science, Technology and Reading: a resource for teachers (ASE, 2000).

Examples

These songs and raps were produced by the Primary 5 class who perform on the DVD.

The teacher shown on the DVD frequently uses the Songs and Raps technique at the end of a topic to assess knowledge. The pupils are organised into groups and given the task of producing a song or a rap to demonstrate what they have learned, in this case healthy eating. In observing and interacting with the groups an assessment of pupils’ understanding can be made. Pupils perform their song or rap, other pupils can give feedback. The whole process is sometimes filmed and shown at parents’ evenings.

This technique, although time consuming, is extremely motivating for pupils and helps to consign facts to long-term memory. This is evidenced by the fact that the pupils in the DVD example are performing songs constructed the previous year.

Apples and Oranges

The apples and the oranges

are here to stay

You better start eating

in a healthy way

Mars Bars and Twixes

should be no more

Melons and peaches

is what you should adore.

Chorus

Get out and about

it’s health week here

Get out and about

‘cause Summer is near.

Visitors have been

to talk about health

But our sweet tooth tells us something else

Eat sugar, drink Coke

it will make you high

Munch all the sweets

And kiss your teeth goodbye.

Chorus

Don’t go drinking

much beer and wine

Drink lots of water

and you’ll be fine

So go and buy some healthy food

Chips, burgers and crisps

will do you no good.

Chorus

Food Poem

Quit the junk and start

eating melons, apples,

grapes and oranges.

Don’t eat crisps,

Chocolate, fast-food

cause it’s not good for you!

That’s all I need to say.

Thank you all, have a good day.

Healthy eating is good for you

Eat plenty veg. tomatoes too

Try some fruit it’s excellent

Bananas, pears and oranges too

Have some carrots and you’ll see in the dark

And all your friends will think you’re smart

Get off the fizzy and on the juice

Help your body to get more loose

Eat plenty fish to give you brains for school

Try this healthy eating plan

And you will feel exc-ell-ant!!

H is for healthy, a fruit good to eat

E is for exercise with your hands and your feet

A is for an apple to keep the doctor away

L is for learning the healthy way

T is for teeth – brush twice every day

H is for horrible sweets that rot your teeth

Y is for you to keep healthy like me!
