USING CARTOONS

Cartoons are a visual representation of scientific ideas. A cartoon can be used to express different views about what is happening. As the ideas are expressed by characters, pupils can identify with a particular character’s ideas thus removing any inhibitions they may feel about giving their own opinion.

Cartoons, either teacher devised or commercially produced, can be used as a :-

  • starting point for an investigation

  • summary or revision of a topic

  • means of assessing understanding

  • means of promoting discussion

  • way of eliciting pupil misconceptions

  • way of promoting metacognition

  • form of homework

A reference source for using cartoons is :-

Naylor S. and Keogh B. (2000); Concept cartoons In Science and Education; Millgate House Publishers.

The following cartoon was devised by a teacher to promote discussion on planning an investigation about respiration of yeast.
