NEGOTIATION OF CHALLENGE TARGETS

The challenge set was to produce a board game to show the journey of food. The pupils were aware that the purpose of this task was to show ’what they know’.

The pupils read the challenge and are shown in the clip breaking the challenge down to small easily managed subtasks. This is called chunking and encourages pupils to read the challenge carefully and plan the steps necessary to achieve the outcome.

This teacher uses challenges as assessment at the end of topics.

Chunking the challenge was brainstormed and filtered to produce the subtasks :-

  • design a board game

  • give it a title

  • game to be played by other groups

  • show how the digestive system works

  • produce a board game

The pupils are shown differentiating between subtasks and criteria concerning form and content. The form and content criteria were negotiated as shown below:

Content

Form

fun and exciting

A2 size

understandable and clear

clear and neat

suitable for age P6/P7

eye-catching

all information must be correct

eye-catching title

include clear rules

presentation

game must show all the main processes of digestion

The pupils agreed a timeline. The game was to be completed by 2.30. As the filming was time consuming these pupils worked over part of lunchtime to make sure their deadline was met.

At 2.30 the pupils presented and explained their games. Each of the groups played another group’s game and gave feedback focused on whether the game met the required criteria.

The games that the pupils produced were of high quality. All pupils were focused and engaged on their particular tasks and the teamwork observed was mature. One of the games produced was used for the theme of this pack.
