OVERVIEW OF THE CRITICAL SKILLS PROGRAMME

The Critical Skills Programme (CSP) is a structured method of working which actively promotes high quality outcomes through collaborative approaches to meaningful challenge–based learning activities. The ‘Critical Skills’ are :-
  • problem solving
  • decision making
  • critical thinking
  • creative thinking
  • communication
  • organisation
  • management
  • leadership

The Fundamental Dispositions are :-

  • ownership of lifelong learning (National Priority 5)
  • self direction (National Priorities 2 and 5)
  • internal model of quality (National Priority 1)
  • integrity of ethical character (National Priority 4)
  • collaboration (National Priorities 3 and 4)
  • curiosity and wonder (National Priority 5)
  • community membership (National Priorities 3 and 4)
The four broad ideas of the Critical Skills Programme are :-

1. Experiential learning
2. Collaborative learning
3. Results driven learning
4. Problem based learning

In a typical Critical Skills Programme classroom, pupils :-

  • frequently work in teams
  • actively solve meaningful problems
  • publicly exhibit their learning
  • reflect on what they are learning and doing
  • apply quality criteria to their work
    take responsibility and ownership of their learning and the classroom community

The Critical Skills Experiential Learning Cycle

Key Stages :-

1. Identify specific targets from the curriculum and critical skills and /or dispositions.
2. Formulate a meaningful problem based challenge
3. Pupils engage-exhibit and debrief
4. Teacher designs, coaches and gives feedback
5. Each step in this cycle arises from, and contributes to a collaborative learning community.

Critical Skills Programme challenges can be:

  • academic

  • scenario (casts students in a real life or role play)

  • real life problems
