RUBRICS

A rubric is a formative assessment tool showing different levels of attainment across a series of columns. The rubric is negotiated and formulated with pupils after some discussion of what makes a quality output. The production of the rubric can be time-consuming but practitioners’ feedback shows that the time invested is worthwhile in terms of the improved quality of pupils’ work. As the criteria are negotiated with the pupils in child-friendly language, peer and self-assessment is facilitated. However, a skills rubric like the one attached, can be re-used, particularly in secondary classrooms where a particular skill might be revisited regularly within S1 and S2.
