Group 4 exemplar Energy & Forces  - Energy (Word)

1. This lesson links to the discussion of day and night in P3G6. You could introduce this lesson out in the playground if the weather was suitable - perhaps after lunch or at the end of break time. Allow the pupils to think about the experience of feeling the heat of the Sun. Remind the class of the term energy and the idea that heat and light are forms of energy. The children will be familiar with the term ‘energy’ in respect of their own bodies but it is a very difficult concept to understand that there are different forms of energy.

Energy Facts

All around us things are happening - people are moving and talking, cars and buses may be moving about, lights and heaters are giving out light and heat. All these things happen because of energy. Energy is what makes things happen all over the Earth and the Universe.

Energy is needed to make cars go, to heat and light our homes and workplaces and to keep our bodies working.

At this stage the children will not appreciate that all our energy comes from the Sun. When asked where heat and light come from they will probably think of heaters and lights and may be able to relate these to electricity and gas.

Further explanation may be needed that electricity comes from fuels like gas and oil which came originally from plants that got their energy from the Sun.
